NEHL – Farringdon, Sunderland

Saturday 29th October 2011

The second race of the season saw a much improved turnout for the men’s team with 10 runners taking to the field.  Farringdon is an undulating course with a muddy stream to cross but perhaps the defining factor is the narrow paths that cause congestion early on in the race.   Conditions were good, but a stiff breeze meant that even running on the flatter sections of the course was challenging.  There was much confusion at the end of the 3 and a half lap course, with some runners completing only 3 laps and, I am told, 1 or 2 literally going the extra mile to complete 4 laps.  It appears that the committee are still trying to untangle the mess as the official results have yet to be published.  Brendan MacMillan led the Claremont team home with his usual impressive run.  The other Claremont performances being solid if unspectacular, it will hopefully be good enough to start our climb away from the relegation places.

There were no such problems in the Ladies race which was over 2 laps of the same course.  Tracey Etherington led the girls home with a commendable run from the medium pack.  Megan discovered just how hard it is to start with the fast pack, finishing 92nd despite completing the course in an impressive 24:37.  Another debutant, Sionna McCutcheon, completed the team after seemingly taking a tough course in her stride.  Lorna Pearson performed admirably as chief cheerleader and cake maker.
