York parkrun consists of one and a half laps around the service road of the racecourse. My rubbish time notwithstanding, it’s possibly one of the flattest and fastest courses in the country. Like the Town Moor, it’s very exposed but thankfully, the wind was quite light on this occasion. The finish is next to the Grandstand and because you have a view of the entire course, it’s quite dispiriting when you realize just how far you have to go while you’re on the second lap. I chose to go specifically on York Marathon weekend knowing there’d be quite a few tourists. Sure enough, almost 200 people turned out and there was some fantastic cake afterwards. If you plan on going, make sure there isn’t a race on. I’ve twice bought train tickets only to find the parkrun cancelled!
