Gateshead Half-Marathon, 30th May 2021

Racing returned to the banks of the Tyne on Sunday morning with the Gateshead half-marathon. It was a hot day (and we haven’t been used to running in the sunshine, have we?), so well done to the 3 Claremonters who took part. Hazel Juggins sends the following report:

“The Gateshead Half Marathon was a new event, originally scheduled for April 2020. It’s been postponed a couple of times, but was run on Sunday 30th May – somehow finding the hottest, sunniest day for months. The event was well-managed with plenty of marshals, and runners were set off in waves, from the stadium, heading out to take in the scenery of the industrial estate and quayside. It was 2 laps, with a couple of hills, and finished back in the stadium – no thunderous applause unfortunately. There were pockets of support and encouragement along the way, with the largest and noisiest contingent by the Baltic. It was good to try out an event, to run with a large group again, and a bonus to meet up with Alan Dunning and Ken McCormick at the start and to see them on the course. We all struggled a bit with the conditions but made it round and picked up our medals.”
