Sherman Cup & Davison Shield, 7th January 2023
This most recent Harriers League fixture saw a return to Temple Park in South Shields after some of us having been there last month for the Championships.
Although part of the NE Harriers League season, this is a stand alone event which awards prizes to the best results overall across all the age categories, from Juniors to Veterans (the Sherman Cup for the men and the Davison Shield for the women).
Multiple injuries have fallen on our men’s team, and we were just short of a Veteran team, despite Tom and Chris representing us brilliantly. On the women’s side we had a Senior and a Veteran “A” team, as well as plenty of extra runners flying the flag!
This was a tough course and the relentless rain through the morning (with an extra shower just a few minutes before the women’s race) guaranteed plenty of mud to contend with. A divisive issue, with some runners positively gleeful over the slippery downhills, with others finding it incredibly hard going!
Hopefully it didn’t put two of our cross country newbies off and we will see the return of Charlotte Johnston and Susan Parker (who packed everything she needed but the club vest, and was saved at the last minute by our one Junior who had finished her race) to this multi-terrain and all weathers league.
The sun at last did come out, and stayed out for both races. Everyone was, as always, incredibly thankful for the vast array of post-race cake options, catering to all dietary requirements and tastes.
