Redcar Running Festival, 24th September 2023
Lynne Cornell sends this report from New Marske Harriers AC’s Redcar Running Festival:
This is a favourite of mine although I’m not sure my left hip is agreeing with me at the moment-my 3rd half in 3 weeks (GNR and Northumberland Coastal Run) and I think I may have to seriously think about curbing my enthusiasm to enter races or at least look at the dates more closely!!! Having said that Redcar was as lovely as ever and it was only in the last mile that my hip started to protest.
There are 4 races taking place, with the half being the 3rd to set off at 10:00. The route has changed slightly again this year due to roadworks. The race starts at Zetland Park then heads towards Markse for half a mile, then turns and you are back along the seafront to Lobster Road in Redcar, another turn and back along the seafront to the turn at the end of the coast road at New Marske, back to Lobster Road, back to New Marske then finally back to Zetland Park.
Whilst there is a lot of the same route the scenery is lovely and this year the run was made ‘interesting’ by the strong wind which was lovely as you ran in a northerly direction, not so much fun going south! The support along parts of the route is great and this year included my husband Steve at mile 9 advising me I only had 4 miles to go!
The reward is a fantastic goodie bag with a t-shirt that fits, a medal showing a lemon top ice-cream (a delicacy in Redcar!), a torch, a pen and a Yorkie, which Steve has already claimed in the absence of trying a lemon top ice-cream despite me offering to buy him one. A good day out was had by all.
Lynne finished in a great time of 1:52:39, and came 3rd in her age category. Well done Lynne!
