NS Poly GP, 3rd October 2023

As the first event in the series is the Blyth Links 10K, the 2nd race in the 2023/24 season of the North Shields Poly Grand Prix is the first one where the runners assemble near the Briardene and run the traditional Grand Prix course of approximately 5.5K along the Whitley Bay sea front. It is also the first time where we start in handicap order. Although it was a mild night for early October, there was a stiff breeze that made it feel much cooler while we were all waiting to be called to the start line. It also meant that the 2nd half of the race was harder than the first (at least, that’s how it seemed to me!).

There was a great turnout from Claremont, with 23 of our 24 registered runners being present. Only Luke Woodend was missing, but as was abroad, I think he has a reasonable excuse! Discussing our handicaps beforehand, a few of us felt that Dave Roberts had been treated kindly and, indeed, Dave did storm through the field to be first Claremonter home in 10th place. Holly Porter and Isabel Neatrour also continued their recent run of fine form to finish 20th and 25th respectively. Sandwiched in between the ladies in 23rd place was Alex Harding, and this was good enough to place Alex in 3rd position in the individual standings after 2 events. KImberley Metson (13th) and Rachel Hurdman (18th) are also handily placed in the top 20 individuals.

In the team competition, all 3 Claremont teams have made a decent start. Rock’s Stars are in 2nd place, just 3 points behind the leaders, with The 3rd Wheelers in 7th and The Full Claremonty 13th.
