Boston Marathon, 15th April 2024

The word legend is bandied around so frequently these days, that I believe it to have lost some of its meaning. However I do not hesitate to describe our very own Mungai Wairia as a North East running legend!

Having completed all the 6 major marathons by running at Tokyo last year, Mungai became only the 11th Kenyan to receive the Six Star Medal, an amazing achievement when you think of the depth of running talent to come out of that country. There are some famous names on that list, but many more star names yet to get there!

Not resting on his laurels, marathon man Mungai was back in Boston for a second bash at this historic, iconic race. Two years ago he had been injured but travelled to Boston, ran and completed the race anyway. So this year was a chance to enjoy the occasion, rather than run through the pain.

Mungai certainly had a much better run this time out, finishing in 3:38:17. Well done, Mungai!
