Sunderland 10K & Half-Marathon, 8th May 2022
It was glorious day for running in sunny Sunderland by the sea for this year’s Sunderland City Races., where Claremont had runners in the 10K and half-marathon.
The 10K started first with Heather Steel and Martin Jobling wearing the Sky Blue. Martin had a good run, but it was a very emotional occasion for local lass Heather who lost her mother last year. This is how she described the day:
“That was tough in more than one way. Lack of training from wisdom teeth issues. But what really hit me was running my home city race without my mam and dad there to cheer me on. So many years I have ran this and seen their faces cheer me on. Running past my mam’s old house and not seeing her really hit me. The reality of grief gave me a kick. Love you both, hope you were watching “.
Recently, I dedicated a post to my mother and so I think it only fitting to dedicate this to Heather’s Mam, Margaret Steel.
In the circumstances, Heather put in an amazing performance.

Fresh from their success at the NEMAA Relays, the dynamic duo of Sarah Kerr and Catherine Young led the 5-strong Claremont contingent in the half-marathon. They helped each other around the course and, as in the relays, were given exactly the same time. Sarah just pipped Catherine to finish as 4th female, with Catherine 5th. Great running by both girls!
David Lydall, Michael Teasdale and Lena Lou also enjoyed good runs in the sunshine. Well done to all!
