Stanhope Trail Races, 16th July 2023

Two Claremont runners were down in Weardale this Sunday, braving steep inclines and blustery conditions at the latest Stanhope Trail Races.

The races start and finish in the small town of Stanhope, nestled deep within the dales, and take the runners up and into the wilds of the North Pennines AONB. To quote from the route description: “a stunning landscape of open heather moors, dramatic dales, tumbling upland rivers, wonderful woods, close knit communities, glorious waterfalls, fantastic birds, colourful hay meadows, stone-built villages, intriguing imprints of a mining and industrial past and distinctive plants”.

Michael Teasdale opted for possibly the more sensible choice, taking on the 10k. This still saw him scaling a total of 340m/1115ft elevation, claiming “I don’t think I’ve ever walked as much in a 10k run as I did today.”

Never one to shy away from a challenge, Sarah Kerr doubled down on the ‘half marathon’ distance (in reality nearly 15 miles), with her total elevation coming in at around 517m/1700ft. She admitted she had taken it relatively easy, but naturally still finished as 2nd lady and 1st in her age category, winning her second prize bag in 48 hours!
