Carlisle Half-Marathon, 23rd March 2025

Lena Lou gives us this account of her triumphant return to the North-West:

“Having previously ran Carlisle Half back in 2022, I had vague memories of the route, but my strava accounted it as ‘relatively flat’ and mentioned a ‘strong headwind’ (this is key).

I was happy to discover that Ann and Eddie were also running the half, and we were able to meet briefly prior to the start of the combined 10k and Half. After some slight confusion to being placed on the incorrect side of the start arch, we made a prompt start at 9.00am.

Of course I got carried away in the first mile, but feeling carried by the crowd I continued on and a sub 2 felt like a slight possibility. The first 2 miles threaded through the city centre, followed by a mile around the park before beginning the first ‘ascent’ along Brampton Road. This felt substantial and was where the 10k runners fed off down the bank. I was surprised to see the majority continuing on, as I recalled being fairly alone back in 2022.

From mile 3 to 8 we were battered with a strong headwind that didn’t relent, I spent the majority of the time praying that on the return it would be a helping hand. Some of the track was fairly narrow between Linstock roundabout and Low Crosby and whilst I had no issues with the fasties returning, some suggested that some path hogging occurring.

I was excited to see Ann on my return who looked very smiley and strong. Unfortunately whilst the wind no longer was attacking us on homeward bound, it didn’t offer a helping hand but I was greatful for the reprieve.

The final 5km was very beautiful and only held one last small incline before the descent into the park but I still couldn’t bring myself to pick the pace back up. The final stretch wound itself around the stadium which was packed with cheering families, however it meant some dodging had to be done.

Overall I am really happy with a 2:03:56 half and was pleasantly surprised to see Eddie not far behind me achieving a Half PB! Ann came in with the strongest finish of all putting myself and Eddie to shame! Coffee and cake was enjoyed in the sun before travelling back home. I look forward to coming back!”

A more succint breakdown from Ann:

“Recommended for:

– free parking

– plenty of toilets at the start (no portaloos in sight)

– prompt, early start

– less than 5 minutes for everyone to cross the start line

– lovely views most of the time

– lots of support from friendly marshals

– PBs all round for the Claremont team!”
