Northumberlandia Trail 10k, 19th July 2025
3 Claremont Road Runners braved the wind and torrential rain on the Northumberlandia Trail this evening. Organised by Northern Fell Runners, the course boasts “hills, fast stone paths, soft trails, forest tracks and a sting in the tail!”.
Ann Smith gives us the lowdown:
“The plan was a summer evening exploring the Northumbrian countryside, enjoying the views, but the reality was somewhat different. After spending the day watching the weather, it became clear that the rain was settled and the forecast thunder storm was not going to materialise.
The race began with an undulating tour of the Northumberlandia Lady of the North before heading out onto a narrow trail path that looked as if no one had walked along for months with brambles and low overhanging branches (no idea how any taller runners avoided concussion). The rain seemed to be getting heavier, if that was possible.
At 6km the route changed to tarmac (hurrah) but uphill, with water flowing down, like running through a river. The next stage was along a wide muddy track with Northumberlandia just about visible through the mist. As I approached, it became clear that those ahead of me were climbing to the top of the structure along the steep zig zag path. My heart sank, but I was boosted by the enthusiastic marshalls cheerily pointing upwards and providing support along the way.
After getting to the top it was a happy final 500 metres downhill to the finish to be greeted by friendly volunteers, a medal, bottle of water and chocolate.
A massive thank you to Northern Fell Runners for this well-organised event and all the volunteers who spent their Saturday evening in awful conditions to encourage us on our way.”
