Great Scottish Run, 5th October 2025

Lynne Cornell reports from across the border:

“It was with much trepidation that Susan (the other green goddess), myself and Steve set off on our train journey on Saturday to Glasgow amidst reports of severe delays due to Storm Amy. Plus we had received an email from the race organisers warning of breezy conditions and suggesting fancy dress/inflatable costumes were ‘simplified’ due to wet and windy conditions! So the inflatable dinosaur costume was left at home! As it was, we arrived in Edinburgh 4 minutes early and easily made our connection to Glasgow.

We arrived at Queen Street Station and made our way to our accommodation, but thought it was a bit strange there was nothing to indicate a fairly major event (32000 runners – a mix of 10k and half marathon) would be taking place the next day. Having checked in we had a very breezy walk to Glasgow Green, which was where the race finish was due to be. There was indeed a finish funnel, a finish line and a few tents, but that was it. One of the men setting up came and asked if he could help and we explained we were on a recce. He said a lot of the signage hadn’t gone up due to the weather and may not go up at all. Apparently on Friday their anemometer had recorded a gust of nearly 90mph! The junior race on Saturday had been cancelled also.

Carb-loaded after a delicious pasta dish, we retired to bed with still no signs of a run in the city centre. When I woke the next morning and was having my pre-run breakfast of peanut butter sandwich at 6 (my race started at 8.30!) I was amazed to see the baggage buses in the street outside our hotel. I could have thrown it down to them. We left the hotel at 7:40, well wrapped up against the biting wind, but thankfully it was dry. Walked the 2 minutes to our baggage bus, found the loos and then made our way to the start on St. Vincent Street. This is a hilly street and this year the race started at the top. Susan and I found our respective starting zones and the warm-up started at 8:13 precisely! Warmed up, I removed the old fleece I’d been wearing to keep warm and we were off.

A quick downhill followed by an interesting route that saw us go up and down motorway slip roads, cross the river 4 times, along some beautiful streets, and finally down Clyde Street along the riverside into Glasgow Green where the finish line was. The conditions on the course were certainly breezy at times but a really enjoyable run.

Collected my bag from the baggage bus and met up with Susan. On the way back to the hotel (about a mile from Glasgow Green) I managed a bacon buttie and a large tea. Following the advice to eat within 2 hours of the run!  Found Steve doing the same thing (!) and we were back at the hotel by 10:30 where we found some guests waiting to start the half marathon (start times from 10:00 until 11:57).

After a quick shower and change, we had the rest of the day to explore this lovely city.

A really well organised, enjoyable run.”
