Great North 10K, 5th July 2026
As well as the 15 runners, Claremont provided a 15 strong volunteer crew (of members and friends) to help at the start and finish, with a few more members out on the course to provide encouragement. This event has grown massively over the last couple of years to the extent that there were 13,000 entries this time.
It is not the easiest course, with the downhill elements coming in the first half to leave the finish as largely uphill, and this is confirmed in this race report from Cate Walker:
“This was my first time running this course, and I had been warned by quite a number of people to leave some energy ‘in the tank’ for the second half, especially the final climb back up to the Town Moor at the end. I was prepared for that and so tried not to get too carried away with the first easy downhill kilometres.
What I hadn’t anticipated was just how many twists and turns there would be! For that reason it was hard to get into much of a rhythm at times, but the brilliant crowd support and entertainment along the route made up for that!
I had been hoping to get in under 50 mins but for the second time that week (the first being the Pie and Peas 10k, 4 days previously), I just missed out, clocking an almost identical time of around 50:30. I consoled myself that, if nothing else, I am consistent!! And fingers crossed the sub-50 10k will come back at some point…
It was great to see a good number of Claremonters old and new, either volunteering, running or taking photos (thanks, Alex!). Our volunteers were furiously pouring cups of water as I went through – much appreciated, and, of course, served with a big Claremont smile!”
Cate may have just missed her sub-50 (it’s coming soon, Cate!), but the tough course didn’t prevent some great times from the sky blue contingent, with an impressive 20th place for Harry Mawdsley and a fantastic run by Heather Steel seeing her finish as 18th female.
