Northumberland Coastal Run, 26th July 2026

This run along the wonderful Northumberland coast from Beadnell to Alnmouth seems to have lost its popularity in recent years, which is a shame as it must be one of the most beautiful runs in the country. A few years back, you had to be on the ball to even get a place as it sold out very fast, and Claremont were not the only club to make a day out of it – with numerous coaches and minibuses ferrying runners up from Tyneside, then collecting them from the beer gardens in Alnmouth for the journey home.

Beautiful as it may be, this is definitely a tough, challenging, 13.5 mile course and, being a coastal run, can be very weather-dependent. Luckily the really heavy showers to hit the North East hadn’t reached that far north before the end of the race, so the runners escaped the worst of it.

This year there were only three of our faster runners on the start line, but all did us proud. It isn’t just the weather that can impact the run, but conditions on the beaches and coastal paths are always variable. This year, all of the runners commented on how hard it was to run through a very rocky patch on the final beach!

Roberto Marzo was the first Claremonter home, finishing in a fantastic 11th place despite having some issues with his knee and commenting: “Tough one this year especially avoiding all the big rocks towards the end!!” Despite decalring that “It broke me this year!”, Mark Anderson still posted an excellent time, while Sarah Kerr finished as 3rd lady and 1st in her age group. Her take on proceedings: “3rd female! You could have knocked me down with a feather. Lucky with the weather as chucking it down now! Forgot how hard that one is.”

Well done to all three, and hopefully we will see more sky blues on the beach next year!
