Derwent Valley Trail Relays, 3rd May 2026

A brand new event by Derwent Valley Trail Runners this Sunday, attended by two Claremont teams. Each runner had to complete a 2.5 mile loop, on a course that could charitably be described as ‘undulating’. What goes up, must come down, our plucky runners had to climb over 300 feet of elevation in the second half of the route!

They also faced a battle with the elements. Sandwiched by two gloriously sunny days, the band of six turned up in a grey and soggy Dipton (see photos!), and were grateful to be able to shelter in the community centre acting as race HQ, before being led the short distance to the start.

Despite the conditions, our ladies reported back favourably, saying that it was a fun experience, even with the mountainous climb towards the end! Unlike most relays, the team criteria were loose, you could enter all women, all men, or a mix. We happened to send an all-female contingent, and the first of our teams across the line were thrilled to discover they were the first female-only finishers, being presented with shiny medals as rewards.

Sadly this was short-lived, as an email sent by the organisers the following day apologised for an error being made with the results, and downgraded our winners to 2nd. They were however allowed to keep their medals, and all six should feel justly proud of their efforts! Hopefully we can get even more interest in this fledgling event next year!
