Port Sunlight 10K, 7th June 2026

Port Sunlight, on the Wirral peninsula, provided the backdrop for our running trip this weekend. The event offers a 5K and a 10K race on the same course – the 5K starting at 10am with the 2-lap10K an hour later. One unusual feature is that a discount is offered for those wanting to run in both – and some 300 runners took up this option! Gill and I were sensible and just entered the 10K. Gill takes up the story:

“This race has been on our list for a few years as my Uni friend Margaret recommended it after we did the Great North 10K together in 2024.  We couldn’t do it in 2025 as Tom was already booked onto the Blaydon so we agreed 2026 was the year. Margaret’s husband Rob doesn’t run so did a fantastic job as taxi driver, baggage drop and photographer with added bird watching alerts.

As the website says, Port Sunlight is a model village built in 1888 by William Hesketh Lever for his Sunlight Soap factory workers. It is famous for its 130 acres of parkland and over 900 Grade II listed Arts and Crafts-style houses, a museum and an art gallery. The route goes in and out of the streets so there’s lots to see and plenty of support along the way.  It also started dead on time at 11 am unlike some local races we could mention.

I was happy to get under the hour and managed a sprint finish to get past a few at the end including the bloke who had started walking and then had the cheek to pass me at 100 metres to go!  I’d do it again although I won’t be signing up for the double of running the 5K at 10 am followed by the 10K. Definitely, one for our Green Goddesses if they don’t fancy the Mersey Tunnel run if they are back in Liverpool.”
