Great North Run, 13th September 2026

It was a hot one this year! So well done to all 39 Claremont Road Runners who joined the Prime Minister on the road to South Shields, not to mention the 12-strong Claremont volunteer team who helped keep things running smoothly at the start and new member Neil Curry volunteering at the end.

Our volunteer team reported for duty early, before the site officially opened, and lots of runners would have still been in bed! There was still a nip in the air and the streets were quiet, but all that was soon to change, and the temperature rose as thousands of runners poured off metros and buses to fill the streets and make their way to the start. We were very quickly busy giving directions and answering questions, of which the two most common were “Where are the nearest toilets?” and “Where can I get safety pins?”. Luckily, we had a plentiful supply of the latter! So we were finished before many of the runners had reached the start line, with the back markers starting after the fasties had finished.

Eventually everybody was on their way in the beautiful North East sunshine, cheered on by the locals all the way to the coast. Whether running for the first time, chasing a course PB or pacing friends or family, all shared the unique atmosphere of the Great North Run. T-shirt and medal collected, many headed back to Newcastle city centre to meet in the pub to exchange stories of the day and have a celebratory drink (or perhaps two!).
