Boston Marathon, 18th April 2022

With a hip injury that made it painful even for him to walk, Mungai Wairia still travelled to Boston determined to run in the marathon.  In his words “Jogged and walked due to hip injury.  Couldn’t achieve my target for 5 hours. Literally dragged my feet for the last 12k.” – but he did it (in 5:43:50).

I think that the word “legend” gets well overused, but it is a label that Mungai deserves.  He is a one-off, a true star, a fantastic runner and a legend of the North East running scene.
