Druridge Bay Beach Trail 10k, 28th January 2024

A trio of Claremont Road Runners went coastal this weekend, Lynne Cornell sends this report:

“This was the first time I have done this race and it was with a sense of relief that I arrived at Druridge Bay to find the car park wasn’t flooded, as leading up to the race there had been warnings of the overflow car park being too wet to use, plus the recommendation to use trail shoes as the course was wet!

I arrived at the visitor centre and bumped into Ann and Eddie Smith. It was quite a chilly breeze so we all left it until the last minute to take off our jackets. Soon we were called onto the field in front of the centre and we were off. The start was exceptionally crowded and I was pleased I had my trail shoes on as I trotted along the grass to try to get into a position where I could run comfortably.

The start of the run goes around Ladyburn Lake and then onto the road that leads to the beach at around the 3.5 k point. The next 2k are on the beach and there was a strong wind blowing from the south which made it ‘interesting’. It was a relief to get off the beach and out of the wind. Those doing the 1/2 marathon would have another 2 miles on the beach!

Once off the beach and up the dunes, the run was along tracks and roads through the East Chevington Nature Reserve, then back to the Druridge Bay Country Park and the finish in front of the visitor centre. Eddie and I agreed the last bit after 6 miles seemed a bit longer than a 10k and certainly our watches confirmed this-6.5 miles.

At the end we were rewarded with either socks, a buff or a bag plus water, beer and a snack bar or chocolate.  The latter is missing from the goodie bag photo – all I’m saying is I didn’t have it!!!! The other half reckons it was his ‘reward’ for standing on the beach watching the race! A good race which I would certainly do again.”

Ann: “Tough running into the wind on the beach. About 5 min spent waiting to get over stiles.”

Well done Lynne on 2nd in your age category!
