Newcastle Half-Marathon & 10K, 14th July 2024

This is a new event on the North East running calendar, organised by RunThrough. Both courses start and finish at the Newcastle Falcons rugby ground in Kingston Park and head out on closed roads, past the back of the airport and through Dinnington. The 10K route is a straightforward out and back, while the half-marathon adds a loop around Horton Grange and Brenkley.

The route has earned a lot of praise from the participants, as being a nice, scenic route – but there have been some complaints from the residents of Kingston Park about inconsiderate parking. Let’s hope that these are just teething issues and the event can become established as another great North East road race.

As to the races themselves, Claremont had 3 representatives in the 10K. Michael Teasdale showed that he is on the road to recovery after recent injury with his longest run to date; Niamh Garratt was aiming for sub-60 and smashed it, and Kenny McCormick was 1st in his age category. So a very happy trio!

We had 4 runners in the half-marathon, though I think that Nina Jensen walked a fair bit in her role as tail-runner! There were half-marathon PBs for Harry Mawdsley and Holly Porter, who continues to go from strength to strength. For Liz Denyer, it was a very last minute decision to enter as it was such a nice, local race and “easy to get home from”.

Well done, everyone!
