LGBT+5K Festival of Running, 19th July
A report from Lynne Cornell, fracture now marginally less stressed:
“As a lot of people know I’m unable to run at the moment due to a stress fracture in my left foot. However when a friend mentioned an event which I could walk and which involved fancy dress and cake, I was up for it.
Susan and I left her home dressed appropriately for the occasion – wigs, tutu, butterfly wings and in Susan’s case, a belly dancing outfit, arriving at the Town Moor to find to our horror that the other people already there were in ‘proper running’ gear. Bit like the party invite you get when you turn up in fancy dress and you didn’t get the memo later to say not to!!!
Our fears were soon allayed when a butterfly appeared, then a chicken and lots of amazing tutus. I bumped into Holly, who didn’t recognise me until I took my glasses off!!! It was a beautiful evening for a run/walk and we enjoyed watching the junior race. We also perused the cake stall and decided what we would get after we had finished the race.
Soon it was time for the 5k and we were off. A mixture of the parkrun route and not, so to speak. A really lovely evening for a run/walk around the Town Moor and the support along the route was amazing. Tempted though I was to run especially on tarmac I resisted and had a lovely time chatting to people as I went round. Finally finished in 44 minutes, but not before a superhero stopped me as I approached the finish line and told me to slow down as she wanted a photo. Turned out the superhero was Nina Jensen!!!
After I crossed the line I was given a spot prize for fancy dress as well as a buff and some fruit which was very welcome. Claimed my prize (I chose a running cap which Steve has decided fits him very well!), bought our chosen cake and went on our merry way home! A great night to be part of and thank you to Newcastle Frontrunners for a really good event.”
