Prudhoe Miners 5k, 25th August 2024
A long overdue report from Lynne Cornell:
“I’ve never done this race before and a few weeks ago a friend mentioned it to me. At the time it was still very early days with regards to my stress fracture, but a couple of weeks ago I thought ‘why not have a gentle go at the 5k’?
As we parked at Aldi in Low Prudhoe Industrial Estate per the race instructions, and started the walk UP the hill to the race start at Prudhoe Town Football Club, we realised the course would not be flat!!! Reminder to self to actually read the course map!
Having collected our numbers, we sat in the stand and watched the rain going past horizontally!!! Fortunately when we lined up at the start, the rain had cleared away and sunglasses were required.
The 5k race and 10k race set off together and we were told to follow the orange arrows unless we wanted to do the 10k! We set off running back down the hill we had walked up to the race start and then turned left at the roundabout on the A695 next to McDonalds. Then an out and back section on closed road Princess Way through the industrial estate, with a turn after about half a mile. Apparently Prudhoe Castle was on my left on the way out, but I was too busy looking where I was going. Then back to the roundabout, a right turn and a slog up the hill we had just come down! A nice flat bit back into the football club and the finish.
Rewarded with a buff and a wooden medal by the Mayor of Prudhoe. Just as I finished the heavens opened, and I was really glad I had opted for the 5k. We were also given a token for a drink at the bar plus there was a buffet laid on as well. A very well organised race with excellent marshalls. I really enjoyed being part of ‘something’ and whilst sensible me is still in control (for the moment!), it was lovely just being able to take part again.”
Well done Lynne on your triumphant comeback. Lynne finished 10th overall, 3rd woman, and 1st in her age category, with a time of 25:51.
