Thirteen Middlesbrough 10k, 1st September 2024
Lynne Cornell sends us another report from her recovery trail:
“This is a run a friend and I had places for in 2023 but then one of us went on holiday, so we were allowed to defer our entries. Susan had always fancied a trot around Middlesbrough so I thought why not.
We set off nice and early to ensure we had plenty of time to park and collect our numbers. Got to the car park to find only 3 other vehicles, so we knew we either had plenty of time, or that we were in the wrong place! Thankfully we were in the right location and wandered to the start in Centre Square to collect our numbers. Susan collected hers fine but I was told my number wasn’t there despite the fact I had been getting emails for several weeks with the event details. Had someone collected it for me during the previous week? No!! I was given a new number, my ‘old one’ was cancelled and I hoped the race would go more smoothly.
By this time lots more people had arrived. My left foot hadn’t been behaving itself for a couple of days so sensible me decided not to go mad but to go round gently to see how I got on knowing that next Sunday I’m still going to try to do the GNR.
At 8.45 we all assembled for a warm up and then at 9:00 we were off on a trot round Middlesbrough. Really interesting course. The first part of the course goes past lots of Teesside University Buildings before going into Albert Park, which is very like Saltwell Park. Lovely green space in the town. Then past the Dorman Museum (as in Dorman Long -the company responsible for the harbour bridges in Sydney and Auckland, the Tyne Bridge and Middlesbrough’s Newport Bridge amongst others), back past Centre Square and under the railway bridge towards the River Tees. Here we were greeted with a magnificent view of the Transporter Bridge before going past the new container port, around the Riverside Stadium, back under the railway bridge and to the finish at Centre Square.
No t-shirt (I have enough!) but a nice medal and goody bag. I had a lovely gentle run and took in all the sights. Poor Susan – apparently I was chatting all the way round!!! Apart from the number issue at the start it was a really well organised, lots of super supportive marshals and 2 very efficient water stops. A really interesting course taking in views of old and new industrial sights. Pleased to report the foot appreciated the gentle trot round!!!!”
Lynne ‘trotted’ round in a time of 57:16. Well done Lynne!
