Autumn Handicap, 28th October 2024

It was an unseasonably warm, dry evening with, strangely for the Tyne Valley, no wind for this year’s Autumn Handicap down on the Quayside. Whilst this was appreciated by the runners, it was probably even more welcome for the marshals and volunteers!

Lena Lou, handicap expert, waltzed home miles ahead of everybody else in the 44-strong field, that included a good number of debutants and guests. Lena was over 2 minutes ahead of another handicap specialist, Rose Hawkswood, in 2nd place. Ann Smith completed an all-female podium in 3rd.

The Autumn Cup should probably be renamed “The Anton Cup” after Anton Mirafsari retained the trophy for another 3 months. It was a close-run thing, though, Anton finishing just one position (9th) ahead of his nearest rival, Anneliza Andreadi (10th). Anneliza and the 2 other finalists, Janet Palmer and Jim Crinnion will have another opportunity in January as all 3 have made the final again. This time they will be joined by Eddie Smith, as Anton’s run of success comes to an end.

Harry Mawdsley was comfortably the fastest runner on the night, completing the course in an impressive 22:38. Anton (yes, him again) was 2nd fastest with guest Grant MacDonald pipping Sinam Wangdi for third. The women were led home by Sarah Kerr in 26:12, with Izzy Neatrour and first-timer Aoife Campbell taking the honours for 2nd and 3rd.

There was an excellent turnout of people and pizzas for the social and presentation at The Carriage, where the club took over the bar as well as the room reserved for us! Special thanks to Anna Round for organising the social; Dave Roberts for organising the race and the volunteers; the marshals for all their encouragement along the route; the start and finish team for a job well done, and Alex Harding for being so efficient in processing the results
