Unfortunately Storm Darragh put paid to our monthly parkrun tourism outing, with the planned destination of Newbiggin by the Sea being one of many events cancelled this weekend. In fact, the worst of the wind and rain didn’t arrive in the North East until a bit later on, so a number of parkruns survived.
The largest Claremont turnouts were at Rising Sun and Denton Dene, with 7 at each. Despite the conditions, Rising Sun saw PBs for Julie Cross and Lena Lou, and there was also a PB for Anton Mirafsari at, the presumably well-named, Windy Nook. Chris Jones finished 3rd at his first outing at Blackhill in Consett.
Across at Denton Dene, the weather didn’t dampen Roberto Marzo’s spirits as he completed his 300th parkrun, having a nice easy run with himself and Sarah Kerr kindly “jogging” so that I could keep up – though Sarah still managed to be first female! Definitely not jogging were Mark Anderson and Harry Mawdsley who had a good race between themselves to finish 1st and 2nd, Mark taking the honours by 4 seconds, despite a brief stop to tie a shoelace.
Away from home, we had two members running in London – Lucy Keating at Victoria Dock, and Cath Robson who thought this of her trip to Highbury:
“Back in London again on family business, it was my turn to keep count of the 5 laps of Highbury Fields. Tricky enough on a good day but taking a constant battering from Storm Darragh, dodging debris, splashing straight through puddles which got deeper with every lap and skidding around on the start /finish grass (mud) certainly added to the ‘enjoyment’! My phone is still drying out and I look forward to returning to my comfort zone marshalling at Leazes next week.”
