Newburn River Run, 18th June 2025

Another mid-week evening race, so of course Lynne Cornell was there, here are her thoughts on the usually warm 5 miler:

“As I drove to Newburn I thought it was going to be a very warm race, but was pleasantly surprised when I got out of the car to find the temperature had dropped, although certainly not enough to consider gloves!!! The sun had gone in and there was a gentle breeze. I went to collect my number from the Newburn Activity Centre and found myself getting a chip band fixed to my left ankle – don’t recall this on this race before.

I had a gentle run to the start line next to the Riverside play area, and watched the rowers going up and down the Tyne. Howard MacLennan arrived and gently persuaded me I needed to start a bit further forward. Then the pre-race instructions and we were off.

Despite Howard’s best efforts it was very crowded, and I got stuck behind 2 ladies who were running together and difficult to overtake. It took a few minutes to get past them but then I was able to run freely. Along the tarmac path alongside the Tyne, right at the cottages and then onto the Cycle Route 72 through the trees. The shade from the trees made it feel very warm and I was very glad to reach the turn around point (and water station) just after George Stephenson’s cottage. Then back along the same route to the finish where a much needed bottle of water was waiting.

Chip removed from ankle, I saw Howard come in, we availed ourselves of the printed results service from the ‘timing’ van and walked to the Activity Centre to collect our picnic tea-sandwich, crisps and ice-cream. Howard kindly supported me by eating my ice-cream as well – not my favourite. Will they ever bring back the pies I wonder and hope?!!!

This is another run I was unable to do due to my stress fracture last year and it felt good to be back. It is one of my favourites!!!”

As ever, Lynne has neglected to mention winning her category, making that two in 4 days! Well done Lynne!
