Wheelbirks Summer Trail 10k, 9th July 2025

A creamy adventure for Nina Jensen:

“It’s all about the ice cream! For those who don’t know, Wheelbirks Ice Cream Parlour is a family run cafe just off the A68 near Stocksfield. When I saw this Greener Miles event advertised with promises that the cafe would be open post race I was sold. I entered without reading the rest of the report which apparently mentioned river crossings and hills.

Luckily I love a trail race and this one did not disappoint! The route indeed was mixed terrain, starting on a flat tarmac road before we hit an uphill gravel track, fields, forest trails and on it went in the glorious sunshine. There were complaints that the river crossings could have been a bit deeper to allow us to cool off before the next hill! Just as we wished for a downhill it arrived but instead of a nice smooth run we slipped and slid grabbing the ferns to keep our balance.

Soon we were back on tarmac for the run in. Medals were multi-purpose, as once you’ve finished showing them off you can plant them to grow some lovely wild flowers. Oh, and the hardest part of the night, deciding what flavour ice cream. I opted for wild cherry and raspberry and honeycomb, both of which were top notch!”

A well-deserved ice-cream for Nina, who finished 38th in a time of 1:05:13.
