RunThrough Sunderland 10k, 23rd November 2025

Lynne Cornell reports from a nippy Wearside:

“As the other green goddess and I drove to Sunderland in the pouring rain I could tell she was very glad she wasn’t running and was going to ‘provide support and hold my coat’! We found somewhere to park and then headed down to the start at Pier Point on Marine Walk at Roker.

The forecast had been for 4 degrees but with the wind chill factor 2 degrees and it felt like it. I decided I was going to be a wuss and run in my running jacket in the absence of any other long sleeves, and quickly put my number on my leg, although it was chip timed from a chip on our shoes.

We hung around the start with the announcement to try to keep warm before we started at 9:00! I was lucky as I managed to hold onto my big jacket until the last minute, at which point Susan kindly took it from me. The rain had also stopped by this time so that was a bonus too.

Then we were off, heading south along Marine Walk before a sharp right turn and the first of the hills up Pier View to the welcome flat of Harbour View. We ran towards Sunderland and turned at a roundabout and back towards the sea .A nice long stretch along Roker Terrace then Whitburn Road with the wind behind us. At the 4.5 K point we turned and headed back along the road.

The wind in our faces was quite strong, and as we descended to the path that runs alongside Seaburn beach it didn’t let up. Along there to another turning point, back along the seafront and then back up a hill to Whitburn Road and into the wind until we came back down to the seafront at Roker Coffee Pod – not open unfortunately. Up through Roker Park and then back along the promenade for the last 2k of the race, finishing where we started. My coat was waiting!!!

A good run and well organised.  Well done to everyone from Claremont who took part – special mention to Joyce Archibold who is an inspiration. Researched by Bill Milbourne: “Joyce Archibold did 1:27:19 at the Sunderland 10k this morning. The world record on the track for FV85 is 1:26:15.'”

In actual fact, Joyce’s actual chip time means she eclipsed that record by over 2 minutes. Another amazing feat from our resident nonagenarian! Commiserations to Catherine Young, who pulled out after around 4km due to feeling unwell.
