While most of the country was basking in the spring sunshine, it was a different story for those of us running on the North Sea coast, and we did spread ourselves down the coast a bit from Newbiggin to Brotton, near Saltburn, via Whitley Bay and Easington.
Perhaps it wasn’t too chilly for the Brotton contingent, as they were a bit further south and a bit inland. Whatever the conditions, they did the club proud, the ladies finished 2nd, 3rd and 5th. “Just beyond glamorous Saltburn, ‘4 laps of a playing field’ doesn’t sound like the most inspiring route, but the enthusiastic volunteers really sell it, and the ‘big dipper’ round the back end of the course is through a charming stretch of woodland. Only 36 runners this week, one to visit if you like you parkruns small and friendly (and don’t mind spending half your time running uphill, though there’s plenty of down, too), with plenty of boutique coffee options in Saltburn afterwards”.
On the tourist trail this week were Alex Taylor in Leeds, and Brian Hegarty who claimed a course PB at Princes Park in Liverpool. There were other PBs to be found nearer home – for Eddie Smith on the Town Moor, and Peter Noble and Mark Flynn as part of a sizeable Claremont group at Rising Sun.
