Tommy Run 10k, 1st November 2026
The Green Goddesses were at it again today, Susan Hillman brings us a report from soggy Seaham:
“Wild Deer’s Tommy Runs are annual 5k and 10k races taking place on the Sunday before traditional Remembrance Sunday. Myself and Lynne Cornell have both done and enjoyed the 10k before so there we were again this year, assembling for the start beside the famous Eleven-O-One Tommy statue close to the seafront in Seaham.
In contrast to my rose-tinted memories of previous years, where I run speedily and gracefully under a beautiful blue sky on a crisp and sunny Autumn morning, this year saw me shivering under a dreich and drizzly grey sky in the teeth of a rather cool north wind.
On crossing the start line the route quickly turned to head north on the appropriately named North Road. Happily, a little before the 2 km point, the route doubled back to give us all a bit of respite from the north wind in our faces, and then we made our way down to the promenade for around 1.5 km beside the seaside. Downhill sections rarely come without a cost however, so it was soon back up to North Road, past the start and now heading south to Nose’s Point and the gravel paths around the nature reserve.
With the north wind behind us it was possible to enjoy expansive views of the North Sea where it was difficult to see where the grey sky ended and the grey sea began. I quickly forgot all such conundrums however when the course turned again towards the finish and the north wind was once again laughing in my face.
The final couple of kilometres had us back on the road with some excellent support for runners along North Terrace to the finish line. As with the start, the race finishes beside the Tommy Statue. All runners were rewarded with a lovely t-shirt and that indescribable feeling of satisfaction on completing another event.
But the wind could have been stronger, and it could have been colder, and it could have been raining hard, so it was really not so bad for running. This was, once again, a great event with a really good atmosphere. I think it’s pretty likely that I’ll be hoping to do it all again next year, whatever the weather has to offer.”
