RAF Spadeadam Blue Streak Trail Run, 10th May 2025
Top gun Nina Jensen sends us this report from north of Hadrian’s Wall:
“There were 2 Sky Blues represented at this event, Chris Jones who had opted for the 11k and I had signed up to the 14 mile option.
I had previously done this run, which takes place on an RAF base (‘Blue Streak’ is a rocket designed in the 1950’s; thankfully never required as a nuclear war head!) a couple of times previously, the last time being in 2018 for the centenary. This also meant I had forgotten just exactly how hilly it was:

Both races started at the same time, so the challenge for those opting to do the longer route was to make sure we didn’t get dragged along by those doing the 11k, however as the route starts with an undulating climb that goes on for about 2.5 miles this wasn’t an issue for me.
At the top of that first hill was a much needed water station, as the temperatures climbed with us; before we did an out and back loop and the 2 races split. Chris was fairly near the front and we cheered each other on before taking our separate paths.
The 14 miler turned off onto some gravel forest paths for the majority of the rest of the run and there were plenty more hills to come. But also some amazing views! The routes did rejoin again at the 12-ish mile mark where we got to run past rocket launchers and tanks.
Humming the Top Gun theme tune, I ran in to the finish where we got an RAF themed goody bag and a congratulations from the base station master!”
