Bamburgh 10k, 15th June 2025
A report from Lynne Cornell, bouncing back at Bamburgh:
“I was delighted to be able to do this race again after having to sit it out last year due to a stress fracture. The weather the day before had been truly horrid although probably ideal for running, cold and foggy, so we wondered what we would wake up to on the day. Still cool (that would soon change!) but the fog had lifted.
Susan and I had a lovely easy journey to get there-we had stayed at Budle Bay the night before, so only a mile to the start. We collected our numbers from the cricket pavilion in front of the castle and then the debate started as to whether I should wear gloves or not as my hands were blue!!! I noticed a Sunderland Stroller putting a long sleeved top on under his vest but thought that was a step too far!!!
I decided against gloves and it proved to be the right decision. By the time we lined up outside the Lord Crewe Arms, it had warmed up and the sun was coming out. I bumped into Christopher Jones. (This was the last I saw of him until I arrived at the finish line and he was standing cheering!!!)
Then we were off up Front Street to the Victoria Hotel, where we turned left into Ingram Road. The route is a circular route on roads with very high hedges with no views until the final 2k, where we were rewarded with views of Bamburgh Castle. The route used to be described as flat, which it certainly isn’t, and I notice next year it is described as ‘a rolling course’ which I think is more accurate. The last bit to the finish is downhill where a much needed bottle of water was waiting.
Then back to the pavilion for cups of tea and ginger cake sitting in glorious sunshine, watching a marquee from the wedding the day before being dismantled.
A good morning out – possibly not one of ‘my favourites’ due to the hedges, but the last 2k and the view of the castle with my cuppa always make up for that!”
