Chopwell ‘Beer & Burger’, 28th June 2025
Rather than going alone, seven Claremont Road Runners went down to the woods today, with promise of a burger-based picnic. Lynne Cornell reports:
“It was a damp, warm evening when we arrived at Chopwell Woods to collect our numbers for the 5pm start. We then bumped into Chris Jones and then Sarah and Mark.
This race has the option of 5,10 or 15 miles which equates to either 1,2 or 3 laps. We discovered we had all opted for just 1 lap. Then Becky Webster arrived and said she had signed up for 10 miles-to be fueled by Kendal mint cake! Well done Becky.
At 4:55 we were summoned for the race briefing in a clearing next to the start and then we were off on a run around Chopwell Woods. The first mile of the race seemed to involve a lot of downhill (what goes down must go up!) followed by 3 miles of steady uphill. I caught sight of Laurie and Cate ahead of me and tried to catch up-just about managed it at the water station 2.5 miles in but then they were off. Youth defeated me!!!
The last mile was downhill to the finish in the clearing where we started – by this time there was gentle rain which was most welcome. At the end it was a case of turning left to finish or right to continue for another lap. We were rewarded with a burger, beer and a pair of socks.
There were excellent performances from everybody. Special shout out to Mark Anderson – 2nd overall and 1st in age category, Sarah Kerr – 6th overall, 2nd female and 1st in age category, Chris Jones – top 10 finish and 2nd in age category, Cate Walker 2nd in age category and to Becky Webster for doing 2 laps whilst the rest of us tucked into our burgers. A good night for Claremont. A great event and would definitely do it again. It could become a ‘favourite!'”
