Newburn River Run, 17th June 2026

Only 3 days on from her last race, the unstoppable Lynne Cornell was at it again:

“It was a warm one last night but not as warm as some of them have been. Whilst I was collecting my number I bumped into Nina, who was also collecting hers and deciding which was her left leg for the ankle tag!!!

Soon we were standing alongside the Tyne at the start next to the play area, watching the rowers. After a few instructions we were off. A run along the path next to the river at which point Nina overtook me and I didn’t see her again until the end.

The path turns right at the cottages, a bit of rough track then onto the Wylam Waggonway for a couple of miles with a very welcome water point just before the turnaround spot, and back along the same route. I had the company of a gentleman from Saltwell Harriers for most of the race and he and I kept changing places until close to the end when he went past me. I saw him at the finish and we congratulated each other for pushing each other on.

Saw Nina at the end and we collected a much needed bottle of water, joining the queue to get a printout of our results. Nina stayed to wait for her Ashington friends and I walked back to the Activity Centre to collect my picnic tea. Sandwich, crisps and ice-cream.

A really good evening out. This is definitely a favourite of mine. One of the first races I was persuaded to enter many years ago and it brings back lots of happy memories.”
