Isaac’s Tea Trail Ultra, 3rd August 2024
“Isaac’s Tea Trail links Alston, England’s highest town, with Allendale and includes romantic hamlets like Ninebanks and the old lead mining village of Nenthead. The route follows public rights of way where livestock graze, and walkers are asked to follow the country code and keep dogs on a lead at all times. A moderate degree of fitness is required, reasonable navigation skills and clothing and footwear suitable for hill walking in potentially poor weather conditions.”
The above description comes from the official website isaacs-tea-trail.co.uk, which goes on to say “Isaac’s Tea Trail can be covered in four or more stages, depending on time available. It is not intended as a challenge walk, but an experience to enjoy because of the variety of wildlife and the range of landscapes passed on the way.”
You may have noticed the references to walking and stages, but, once a year, some mad hardy souls decide to turn it into an ultra-marathon. Amongst them this year were Claremont’s own Isabel Neatrour and Kimberley Metson. Izzy, with her penchant for understatement, described it as “a bit long”, while KIm said it was “Longest workout of my life to date…” They were lucky to have lovely weather for their adventure and enjoyed their day in the beautiful Northumberland countryside.
They finished in 52nd and 53rd place, completing the course in 9:34:51. Well done!
