Langdale Marathon, 19th October 2024

What does one do when having run over 100 marathons (and counting)? Just keep at it – but go harder. Nina Jensen sends this account:

“When asked what my race plan was for the Langdale Marathon,my only aim was to not be one of the 15% DNFs that give the event the award for Most Brutal Marathon in the UK. However, I’d say it’s also the most stunning, with 360 views on every turn.

The event is 2 laps (it also offers a half marathon) and has 3566ft of elevation with a couple of 25% climbs on each lap. Apart from the first and 14th mile everything else was either up or down but the fast downhills allowed you to make up for the long slow slots uphill.

The first lap was busy, as both the half and full started at the same time, whereas the second lap thinned out with points where we didn’t see anyone else, and the silence (and our heavy breathing) was deafening. Surprisingly, despite my estimate based on first lap of a 5:15, finish we sneaked in under 5 hours (4:58:00). Medal and water at the finish. All in all a great, well organised event.”
