Jarrow 10k, 19th October 2025

Lynne Cornell reports from Jarrow on a cool Sunday morning:

“This is the 3rd year of this race, yet the first time I’ve done it. I had a place in 2023 but injury prevented me from doing it, so I was delighted to be able to participate this year.

It is organised by RunThrough and starts and finishes with a lap of Monkton Stadium. The other green goddess and I arrived nice and early and the first challenge of the day was taking my wee Fiat 500 off-roading on the event car park. which was a grassy field with some huge bumps – similar to Druridge Bay cross-country last week!

A short walk to the stadium and we arrived at 8:15 to find it quite busy, considering the A race was at 9:00 and the B race at 9:15. The A race is for those speedy people who can run under 40 minutes. It was a cool morning so we sought a bit of shelter in the stadium and were joined by Cate and Lena. Chatted for a while then saw Ann and Eddie arrive too. The time came when I would have to remove my fleece and hat and drop my bag off, but not my gloves! To be fair, it was very good conditions for running.

We watched the A race start and then hung around waiting for the B race to be called. I thought we would line up in expected time order, but this didn’t really seem to be happening and when I saw I was behind the 1 hour pacer I managed to gradually move myself into a better position, as I have a tendency to hang back and then have to weave so thought I would go for less weaving. I saw David from Washington Running Club who I met at the half marathon in Malaga last year – he runs at roughly the same pace as me, so when I saw him I thought I was in about the right place.

Then we were off. Round the stadium and onto a path that had a few hazards and was quite uneven and finally onto Dene Terrace. This leads to York Avenue and then Bede Burn Road and it was as the other green goddess described -run up the roads, back down the roads and repeat!!! Not as dull as it sounds and lots of spectators too.

Having run up and down the roads twice we then went back onto the rough path and finally into the stadium for a lap to the finish. David from Washington finished 5 places ahead of me so I was pleased with my decision to move forward at the start. It was good to see Peter Noble at the end who also took some great action shots of us in the stadium. We were soon joined by the rest of the Claremont team.

Everyone put in great performances and 3 out of 5 Claremonters got PBs. Massive congratulations to Lena who after her parkrun success on Saturday got a 10k PB; as she put it herself on Strava -‘DOUBLE PB WEEKEND!!! (17 minutes off last year’s course)’. Huge congratulations to the Smiths too who both got PBs. Both of them by 1.5 minutes and as Ann said ’10 k PB by 1.5 min (and 4 years in age)’

Obligatory photos taken it was off to find my car and offroad again! Really enjoyed the course and would definitely do it again. It may become a ‘favourite’!”

As usual, Lynne neglected to mention coming 2nd in her age category. Well done everyone!
